‘Exploring Support For Parent / Family Carers’

This year PACC is holding its annual conference during Carers Week and are focusing on exploring what good support for Parent / Family Carers might look like.  Over the past few years there has been increasing research on the impact of becoming a Parent / Family Carer on an individual’s health and wellbeing.  A Parent Carer is defined in law as

“a person, who is at least 18 years old, has parental responsibility and provides or intends to provide care for that child (0-18).  This care can include practical, emotional or personal support”

This definition includes kinship carers and foster carers.  Once the young person requiring support turns 18 then those providing unpaid care are classed as ‘carers’ under the Care Act.

Parent/Family Carer health and wellbeing is a key factor in achieving positive outcomes for children, young people or young adults with SEND.

The conference will be opened by Rachel Wright, nurse, author and Director of Born at the Right Time and parent of neurodiverse and profoundly disabled sons. Rachel is a confident, engaging presenter who has appeared on television, local and national radio. She loves the power of people’s stories and is passionate about amplifying the voices of others. She can become very passionate about 100% Attendance Awards and the Born at the Right Time please “Don’t Call me Mum” initiative. Rachel also hosts a podcast ‘The Skies We’re Under’ where she talks to fellow parents of people with disabilities and others in their community.

“With the power of storytelling, laughter, swearing and useful information they together create solace in knowing the warts and all truth of this off-piste version of parenting. Whether a well-seasoned parent carer, newbie, one of many practitioners supporting families or simply someone wanting to peak over the fence – you’re welcome to listen in. We are better together, whatever Skies We’re Under.”

In recognition of Carers Week there will be a focus at the conference on providing a supportive and relaxing atmosphere, with the offer of a wellbeing activity before a lunch and time to chat with friends.

After lunch there will be a chance to share your thoughts on what good support for Parent / Family Carers should look like, with discussions about;

  • Community and belonging
  • Empathy and Understanding (Practitioner Training)
  • Empowerment and Understanding Your Rights
  • Practical Support
