How PACC can help professionals

Are you looking for the views of parents and carers of children with disabilities or additional needs?

Would you like parents and carers to have a voice in developing services that affect their families?

The Parent and Carer Council Shropshire is a group of parents and carers of children with disabilities or additional needs who are happy to share their views about services and be involved in planning and developing services. We can put you in touch with relevant people who can provide the input and feedback you need in whatever form you need it. This can be anything from a simple questionnaire, to an invitation to join a committee or a consultation meeting.

We base our activities on the descriptions of parent participation described by Contact a Family, who are currently taking forward the government’s agenda for participation. They define three areas of work: Information, Consultation and Participation.

Inform

We are able to:

• Offer guidance on request on the wording and design of information materials;
• Offer guidance on request on the distribution and delivery of information;
• Maintain personal links with Shropshire parent/carer groups;
• Inform PACC members using our newsletters;
• Help to arrange information delivery meetings.

Consult

We are able to:

• Offer guidance on request on the wording and design of consultation materials;
• Directly contact members on the PACC database to ask for their views;
• Visit parent/carer groups to ask for individual and group views;
• Help to arrange consultation meetings;
• Feed back to those who took part on the outcome of the consultation exercise.

Participate

We are able to:

• Recruit parent/carer representatives to participate in decision making;
• Work with the agency/organisation to ensure that the parent/carer is fully supported and informed;
• Work with the parent/carer to ensure that they are able to represent a wide variety of views and to generalise from their own experience.
