Shropshire Face 2 Face provides emotional support for parents and carers of children with disabilities or additional needs, either at the time of diagnosis or when life becomes challenging due to issues connected to their child’s disability. The unique value of the scheme is that the support is provided by other parents or carers of children with disabilities or additional needs, who have completed comprehensive training to become Face 2 Face befrienders.
The first course for Shropshire Befrienders was completed in September 2010 and the scheme was officially launch in the County in October of that year. Funding from our originally grant from Shropshire Council has now been allocated to running a second befriending training course. The training covers approximately 10 weekly sessions (excluding holiday periods) and considers the impact of diagnosis on parents, the role of a befriender, the importance of confidentiality, safeguarding etc. The parents who completed the first course found the experience extremely rewarding and beneficial, helping them to understand their own needs as well as those of others in a similar situation
Shropshire PACC have been able to secure funds for a second Face 2 Face befriending course to be run from the end of January 2011.
