SHROPSHIRE SHORT BREAKS PROJECT

IMG_5321e

PACC has been involved in the Shropshire Short Breaks Project since its conception, providing the parents perspective and gathering information about how families would like to see Short Breaks delivered. There have been some ups and downs and a change of personnel that held things up slightly but now the project is really motoring forward.

The project was formally launched in the county in 2010 and families who attended the Information Day in Shrewsbury had a chance to vote on their favourite suggestions for a name. The name that got the most votes was ‘All In’ and this will now be adopted as the project name, reflecting the principle of inclusion and access for all regardless of ability.

The ‘All In’ activity programme started on May 2010 half term with a series of activities throughout the county. Information about how to register and become an ‘All In’ member along with the most recent programme can be found on the Shropshire Council website (link below). An extensive timetable of activities is available , including holiday clubs, dance workshops, sports sessions etc. The programme reflects parents input and offers a variety of structures, with some activities being family based while at others trained and experienced support workers will be on hand so that parents do not need to stay.

The funding for Short Breaks was initially delivered through the Aiming High for Disabled Children’s programme and the first round of funding ends in March 2011, however further funding has now been provided by central Government for Local Authorities to continue with a Short Breaks programme, if they wish. The funding is no longer ring fenced and PACC has been working hard to raise the profile of the value of Short Breaks and the necessity for this support to continue.

We know that some things are still to be sorted out and some issues that parents have raised such as access to transport are still to be fully resolved but the important thing is that we are travelling (excuse the pun!) in the right direction. We hope that we will get the chance to meet many of you at the ‘All In’ events and please do not stop sharing your thoughts and ideas with us, they really do make a difference.
